Geisha

Geisha (detail), ink painting on paper, 190 x 112 cm, 2022

Geisha painting carries a reference to Ukiyo (floating world) – a lifestyle during the Edo period (17th – 19th century), whose philosophy was to live for the present moment, enjoy life and let yourself drift in the flow of time. At the same time, it was a time when many girls became geishas. In the heavily patriarchal Japanese culture, girls, especially those from poorer backgrounds, did not have many choices in terms of employment, and many girls from poor families (typically daughters of peasants) were even sold into geisha houses at an early age.
The crumpled heart symbolizes an unhappy love, as the rules forbade geisha to have a relationship or marry.
